The project is overseen by Gregg Zehr, who runs Amazon's Lab126 hardware research and development division where devices such as the Echo speakers, Fire TV set-top-boxes, Fire tablets and the ill-fated Fire Phone was developed. I is understood though that the Vesta robot may work like a sort of "mobile Alexa", which will supposedly escort homeowners to areas of their house where they can't practically speak to an Echo device.

Engineers are reportedly working on Vesta prototypes with advanced computer vision similar to that in self-driving cars.

Amazon is hoping to start testing out the robots in employees' homes by the end of 2018 and possibly begin selling them in 2019, according to the report. The division is now hiring engineers with principle sensor and robotics software experience. The giant's new smart robots would be manufactured under the project name, "Vesta". Extending that to other specialized robots, like home monitoring and voice assistance, is a natural next step. The company has a division called Amazon Robotics, formerly Kiva Systems, handling its custom warehouse inventory-moving robots.

It's unclear what tasks an Amazon robot might perform. In 2017, we saw a sudden explosion of smart speakers and AI assistants, and ...

Reports have surfaced that Amazon's latest top-secret plan could take the e-tailer deeper into consumers' living rooms and further into the future. New rumors today claim that Amazon is looking to launch something technophiles have dreamed about for decades: a consumer robot for the home.

Amazon is rumoured to be pushing ahead with plans for a domestic robot. The feedback of these robot suggests that they promise more than they provide, and of course, Amazon's Echo devices already offer the same functionality with less hype. Anything Amazon assembles would want to become equally as wise. LG is even getting in on the action, having demonstrated its own CLOi bot, which unfortunately failed several times to respond to its human counterpart.
