After reports of heavy gunfire near the Royal Palace in Riyadh, many people got scared and confused it to an attempted coup on the holy land of Saudi Arabia.

The videos of the gunfire shared on social media showed shots being fired for at least 30 seconds.

In 2015, the Gulf kingdom banned drones "of all types and sizes" from operating in Saudi skies without a special permit from the General Authority of Civil Aviation.

Government officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the whereabouts of the Saudi king and crown prince during the incident.

A security screening point had noticed a small, unauthorized recreational drone, leading security forces to deal with it "according to their orders and instructions", state news agency SPA has said. Reuters was unable to independently verify the videos' authenticity.

In the wake of the very serious incident, the Ministry of the Interior reiterated that the use of drones is only allowed within special "permitted sites", and only after obtaining a license.

"The king was at his farm in Diriya", the official said, naming another area of the capital.

Amid the vast program of reform that has been spurred by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, sports authorities started granting licences for women's gyms to encourage Saudi women to embrace healthier lifestyles. Prominent clerics have also been detained in an apparent bid to silence dissent.

Riyadh and Tehran are locked in a decades-long struggle for supremacy that is being waged in several countries, including Yemen.

Since 2008, Saudi Arabia has rejected all requests for visits by special independent rapporteurs of the United Nations, who are concerned about the kingdom's human rights violation, the report added.
