As the race, started via a big red button from The Queen in Windsor, headed into its second half around Canary Wharf, Farah moved alongside Kipchoge and Kitata.

With the run, he has now shattered Steve Jones' 33-year-old British record.

Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge stormed to his third London Marathon title yesterday to complete an impressive Kenyan double after Vivian Cheruiyot beat the heat to win the women's race.

The original finishing times given for the race were revised after organizers discovered a computer error.

Farah was at the back of the lead group despite twice making a mess of picking up his water bottle at the designated drink stations. "I don't think I will celebrate this performance, I have celebrated by inspiring many people", he said.

Cheruiyot took advantage of failed attempts to break Paula Radcliffe's 15-year-old world record by last year's victor Mary Keitany and runner-up Tirunesh Dibaba. "Different pain - cramp and heavy legs - and different training but I have really enjoyed it. Tick to the British record, I have a long way to go".

The 35-year-old Farah added: 'I am knackered, the guys just went for it, at world record pace. "I was table four, but the staff was trying to take pictures and I was trying to take a drink".

David Weir won the men's wheelchair race for an eighth time, the 38-year-old Briton saying: 'The older I get, my endurance is getting better'.

Cheruiyot, who finished fourth a year ago in 2:23:50, over took defending champion Mary Keitany just after the 35km mark before cruising to her second ever marathon victory in personal best.

"I didn't want to race against anybody, I wanted to race alone".

Keitany and Dibaba, who were sportingly sharing drinks in the opening segment, were ahead of Radcliffe's schedule through five kilometres in 15:46 and 10 kilometres in 31:46.

Indeed, Keitany and Dibaba took the warm morning conditions with a brutal attack with some fast-pace backed up by four male pacesetters.

Eliud Kipchoge has won the London Marathon for the third time, while there was a surprise victory for Vivian Cheruiyot in the women's race. "I promised a lovely race and it was", he added.

Madison de Rozario of Australia secured a victory in the women's wheelchair race.
