  • Armenia's Prime Minister Resigns After More Than A Week Of Protests

Critics accused him of using the tactics of his ally Russian President Vladimir Putin to maintain power: handpicking a successor to the presidency after his term limits were up and moving onto the position of prime minister, where power had been shifted.

Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has resigned less than a week after he was appointed, according to a statement published Monday afternoon on his official website.

"Proud citizens of Armenia, you have won!" "There are several possible decisions in this situation, but I won't take those", Sargsyan said in an address to the nation.

Sargsyan formally took over the post of Prime Minister last week, but he was met with widespread protests started by opposition parties and joined by civic groups from around the country. The street movement was against me. I fulfil your demand.

Protests led by Armenian opposition MP and leader of Civil Contract Party Nikol Pashinyan were held before Sargsyan took up office on April 17. "Peace, harmony, and common sense to our country", Serzh Sargsyan wrote. Until his release, Pashinyan's whereabouts had been unknown. He has served as president of the ex-Soviet country for 10 years. Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetian announces Sargsyan will succeed him.

Mr Pashinyan congratulated the people on their "victory" following the resignation.

Asked about the crisis on Monday before Sarksyan's resignation, the Kremlin called Armenia an "extraordinarily important country" for Russian Federation, but dismissed the idea it might intervene, calling the crisis a domestic matter.

Asked if Russia would intervene, Mr Peskov said the matter was "exclusively an internal affair" and Russian action would be "absolutely inappropriate".

The rallies protesting his appointment as prime minister quickly turned into celebrations, with demonstrators hugging, dancing and cheering.

Pashinyan said he had come not for dialogue but only "to discuss the conditions of your resignation and the peaceful transfer of power - without a shock", according to a transcript published by Panorama.am. Armenians voted in a referendum to move from a presidential to parliamentary system, boosting the prime minister's role.

The protests in Armenia have been mostly non-violent with some exception, but still quite disruptive. They feel like they deserve a better life and a more democratic country. Demonstrators and police clash again, and 232 are reported to have been arrested.
