  • Maker of Failed Southwest Airlines Engine Calls for Closer Inspections

The company canceled more than 70 flights Monday.

Southwest Airlines has canceled 40 flights a day since they announced their voluntary inspection program following a deadly accident aboard a plane that made an emergency landing in Philadelphia. The cancellations represented about 1% of its planned Sunday schedule, Southwest said.

On Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration and European airline regulators ordered emergency inspections within 20 days of almost 700 aircraft engines similar to the one involved in a fatal Southwest engine blowout earlier this week.

The service bulletin called for ultrasonic inspections within the next 20 days on fan blades of engines which have accumulated more than 30,000 cycles.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency both issued an emergency directive calling for airlines to inspect certain engines. The accident occurred aboard a flight from New York's LaGuardia to Dallas, when, about 20 minutes after takeoff, the left engine exploded, sending shards of metal into the fuselage.

This led to debris breaking a window and causing the death of Riordan, who was sucked partway out of the 737 and later died from the trauma.

Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that Indonesia's Sriwijaya Air is most exposed, with 26 aircraft powered by CFM56-7B engines in its fleet.

According to CFM International, about 680 engines will be impacted by the order to inspect engines with more than 30,000 cycles within the next 20 days.

The FAA must mandate the additional inspections of engines similar to the Southwest airliner that blew apart this week to improve safety.

In a statement released Sunday, Southwest said it notified customers Tuesday that there might be an impact because of the inspections.
