That can be a hard and perhaps impossible task.

The initial warning was limited to chopped romaine; it has since been expanded to include all forms of romaine lettuce, including "whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce", according to the CDC website. And the bacteria tend to cluster in spots many times smaller than the head of a pin.

Wegmans stores have also posted signs indicating that all of the chopped, whole and romaine hearts being sold in its stores come from growing areas other than Yuma.

No one should eat romaine lettuce - or any lettuce at all - unless they can be sure it's not from Arizona, federal health officials said Friday. More cases of E. Coli infection may be reported in the coming weeks, since some people may not immediately report the illness. Call them at 1-888-377-8900. Eighteen more cases of E. Coli were reported since the CDC's last update on April 13. "This story is developing rapidly, and information is changing every day".

No specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified at this time. One restaurant in New Jersey was named as a possible facility in this outbreak, but no government officials has mentioned it since the first identification.

The E coli break out has contaminated a total amount of 53 individuals within 16 states, authorities pointed out. The multistate outbreak has sent six people to hospitals. Thirty-one people have been hospitalized in the current outbreak, and at least five have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Those damaged cells stop working, which can cause anemia.

Symptoms of E. coli O157 include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and abdominal pain. This means the kidneys have been affected.

Despite a nationwide recall on romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz. area, lettuce found in Harvard's residential dining halls is safe for consumption, according to Harvard University Dining Services Director of Communications Crista Martin. The bacteria that make these toxins are called Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC for short.
