  • Cyber security has become a focal point of the strained relations between Britain and Russia

A rare joint conference was held by the senior security officials of the United Kingdom and the U.S. to blame the Kremlin for targeting the government institutions, private sector organizations, and infrastructure.

Russian Federation is preparing to mount cyber attacks on Britain's "critical infrastructure" including energy networks, the emergency services and the armed forces, GCHQ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have warned in the wake of the Syria air strikes.

The goal of the announcement Monday was to warn corporations and individuals to protect themselves against attacks.

"The FBI has high confidence that Russian state-sponsored cyber actors are using compromised routers to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks to support espionage, extract intellectual property, maintain persistent access to victim networks, and potentially lay a foundation for future offensive operations", the website added.

The British government on Monday condemned what it and the United States have described as a Russian government-backed campaign of cyber espionage as another example of Moscow's disregard for global rules.

Officials said the activity had been under observation for "some time" and was not directly related to missile strikes on Syria.

Jeanette Manfra, National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications said: "Russian government activities continue to threaten our respective safety, security, and the very integrity of our cyber ecosystem".

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas speaks at a news conference in Brussels Thomson Reuters BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government has to assume that a cyber attack on its Foreign Ministry stemmed from Russia, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told the broadcaster ZDF on Sunday.

Director Howard Marshall said the alert underscores the United States' commitment to fighting malicious cyber activity.

It also recently announced that Russia had targeted the U.S. energy grid with computer malware, and it slapped fresh sanctions on Russian hackers for illicit cyber activity.

Ciaran Martin, chief executive of the British government's National Cyber Security Centre, said "millions of machines" were targeted in the campaign. "The NCSC is leading the way globally to automate defences at scale to take away some of those basic attacks, thereby allowing us to focus on the most potent threats". It marks an important step in our fight back against state-sponsored aggression in cyberspace. "But unlike Russian Federation, we abide by the law, so anything we do would be proportionately done", said one source.

Ms Manfra said the campaign was widespread and could cover "everything from large enterprises to small home offices".
