Attorney Gloria Allred arrives for actor and comedian Bill Cosby's sexual assault retrial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Intention in a case like this can come up in cross-examinations, but Cosby could simply continue to insist that he sought not to sedate Constand but to simply give her something that would soothe her. His first trial ended in a hung jury in June of a year ago, while his retrial began on Monday - and in between the two, stands the #MeToo movement and an increased call for justice for sexual-abuse survivors. "She's now a multimillionaire because she pulled it off", defence lawyer Thomas Mesereau said of Andrea Constand, 44, who won a $US3.4 million settlement from Cosby in a civil lawsuit in 2006.

She testified that the assault began when she became incapacitated after accepting three small blue pills that Cosby said would help her relax. She had been there twice before for one-on-one dinners - including one time in which she said Cosby tried to unbutton her trousers on a couch, but she rebuffed him.

Constand recalled being invited over to Cosby's house back in 2004 when she was managing the women's basketball team at Temple University.

Cosby says she consented to a sexual encounter.

Cosby spokesperson Andrew Wyatt on Thursday derided the five additional accusers who testified as "distractors" and "advocates for the prosecution and Andrea Constand". Ms Chelan Lasha said as she looked across to the entertainer when she testified in a courtroom on Wednesday about a 1986 incident.

"He got the picture", she said.

Constand's testimony was buttressed earlier this week by the evidence of five women who all told strikingly similar stories of having been lured by Cosby with the promise that he would mentor and coach them, only to find their trust in him shattered when he allegedly sedated and then violated them.

With Constand living in her native Canada by this time, they went to the Durham Regional Police in Ontario and later told her brother-in-law, a Toronto police detective. And he nodded yes with his head, and he said, 'Put them down. All of them testified they wound up unconscious from the pills or alcohol he gave them, unable to say no or resist as he had his way with them.

"There was a sticky wetness between my legs and it felt like I had had sex", she said, testifying that for decades she blamed herself.

"What did she want from Bill Cosby?". Then, she said, she felt him digitally penetrate her.

"As a mother of daughters", she said, "and as one who is now a statistic, it was important to me that they know if anything happened to them, they could come to me". He guided me there, and he laid me in the bed.

"I trusted him because he's 'America's Dad, '" Lublin said.

She told jurors she wanted to include details about the assault, but wound up telling a highly sanitized version in which there was no sex at all, let alone a rape, because her publisher told her the legal department would never let the allegations against Cosby make it to print.

About 50 women have accused Cosby of assault, many of them alleging, as Constand did, that he drugged them.

She described how she first met Cosby at a Temple University women's basketball game in the fall of 2002.

Dickinson told Cosby's lawyer she "wasn't under oath" when she wrote the book like she is now.

Cosby's attorneys said again that they believe that Constand found a way to extort money from their client, and they believed the other women were regretful about a consensual affair with a married man.

The defense plans to call Jackson as a witness, and Mesereau said she will testify that Constand mused about setting up a celebrity so she could sue and get money.

"You remember, don't you, Mr. Cosby?"

Cosby smiled slightly as she spoke; his lawyers stood in anger, asking the judge to declare a mistrial.

"You're kind of turning my words around", she told Cosby's lawyer Tom Mesereau.

In addition to chief complainant Constand, former model Janice Dickinson is one of five additional accusers testifying during the retrial.

"It was a very, very short visit and I wanted to get some information-- which he would not volunteer to me, which was 'What did you give me and why did you do this?'"
