Taliban guerrillas attacked a district headquarters in Afghanistan's Ghazni province on Thursday, killing its administrator along with at least 14 others, officials said.
Scores of militants struck the compound in Khwaja Omari district at about 2am, scaling the walls with ladders and overwhelming the government troops inside.
The insurgent group's spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told The Associated Press over the telephone that after the attack in the Khuja Omari district, not far from the provincial capital also called Ghazni, all security posts in the district were under Taliban control. The Taliban has laid siege to several major cities in the years since North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces ended combat operations... The province is reportedly under Taliban control. Rahmani said the attackers planted mines to stop reinforcements from coming to help the government forces fend off the attack.
Taliban said they have captured the district, a claim that was rejected by the local police officials, the TOLO News said.
In the ensuing fire exchange, two assailants and an ALP member were killed and four militants and five security personnel wounded, the governor's office said.
A general view shows the site of an attack by Taliban militants on a government compound in the Khwaja Omari district in the southeastern province of Ghazni. Travel by road between the capital and southern Kandahar province, a traditional Taliban heartland, is considered unsafe because of large swaths that are now under insurgent control. Other than the district governor, Ali Dost Shams, all the casualties were security forces, Mohsen said.
The Taliban usually announce the launch of a spring offensive in April.
