US House Speaker Ryan won't seek re-election, in blow to Republicans

  • Cathy Myers, A Democrat Vying for Paul Ryan's House Seat, Says the Speaker Is

Mr Ryan joins almost 30 House Republicans who have announced this year they are retiring outright. To do so, they would have to pick up at least 23 seats in the 435-member House.

"I've given this job all of the issues I had, and I've no regrets in any method for having accepted this accountability", talked about Ryan, as he launched he would not search re-election on April 11.

Paul Ryan had to be coaxed into taking the speaker's gavel in 2015 and never seemed to relish the job.

Ryan made an apparent Freudian slip while introducing President Trump before his first State of the Union earlier this year: "I have the high privilege and the distinct honor of preventing, uh, presenting to you the President of the United States".

Ryan has said he fully expects that this will be his last job in elected politics and the source familiar with the speaker's decision would not discuss Ryan's plans or next steps.

Hoping to push forward on conservative legislation, Ryan worked with the president more than against, but he was still - on a near-daily basis - quizzed by reporters on the latest Trump tweet or sound-off.

US House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Wednesday he has been assured by the White House that President Donald Trump does not intend to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein over their Russian Federation probe.

President Trump appeared responsible Romney's loss on Ryan all through his private advertising and marketing marketing campaign in 2016.

Citing family reasons for his decision, Ryan clarified that he is not resigning and that he would serve the rest of the term till early January next year. I just cant let that happen.

The speaker will frame his decision as one of putting family first - and, with young children, the fundraising and legislative duties of the office are burdensome - but it's impossible not to view the move in a larger political context.

Paul Ryan I have no plans to run for anything

"I will serve out my term and then will leave a Republican majority in good hands with a bright future", he said. He was supplanted by Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the House speaker whom Mr Ryan replaced - John Boehner - announced on Twitter he is joining the board of a legal cannabis corporation "because my thinking on cannabis has evolved".

He pledged that he would help fellow Republicans extensively in the 2018 campaign and said he would continue raising money at a powerful pace, according to two lawmakers in the room.

Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, praised Ryan as "a good man who is always true to his word".

"I like to think I've done my part, my little part in history to set us on a better course", Ryan said.

"I gave it some consideration but I really do not believe whether I stay or go in 2019 is going to effect a persons individual race for Congress".

He informed his GOP colleagues he was not running for re-election so he could spend more time with his three children - their childhood is quickly ending, he said, and he wants to be a dad.

State Rep. Cameron Henry, R-Metairie, a former Scalise aide, said the speaker's role is highly coveted among House members and a great fit for his longtime friend.

Key figures including Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise declined to comment on whether they would seek to succeed Mr Ryan when quizzed by journalists.
