Mark Zuckerberg's messages has been secretly deleted by Facebook for protection

  • FIXING’ FB Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been requested by a U.K. parliamentary committee to answer questions on fake news in the investigation into Cambridge Analytica’s alleged improper use of Facebook information

The comments came in the wake of revelations that the personal information of 87 million users had been inappropriately used by the data firm Cambridge Analytica in the 2016 election campaign, the New York Post reported.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal is making people hyper-aware of how much their private information is available not just to Facebook, but to anyone savvy enough to get it.

It is now broadening its investigation by joining the B.C. privacy czar's probe of Victoria-based firm AggregateIQ, which began late previous year, to determine whether the company broke privacy laws. Facebook does not have the trust of most people right now. Now, TechCrunch reports, Facebook plans to roll out an "unsend" feature to everybody. "We did so in full compliance with our legal obligations to preserve messages".

Facebook says it began erasing the messages of Zuckerberg and a few other top executives in 2014 after computer hackers obtained and released emails from Sony Pictures executives. And now, social media giant Facebook in several months will make available to its users a feature that will save them from this regret.

"These steps by themselves won't stop all people trying to game the system", the Facebook chief said.

The move also comes amid concerns that Russian-sponsored entities delivered Facebook ads designed to create discord and confusion ahead of the election and that firms like Cambridge Analytica created messages based on psychographic profiles gleaned from the platform to influence voters.

"We thought that the data had been deleted", Sandberg said. "Instead, the focus would be on producing general insights that would help medical professionals take social connectedness into account as they develop treatment or intervention programmes for their patients", a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Facebook was aware more than two years ago of Cambridge Analytica's harvesting of the personal profiles of up to 87 million users and can not rule out other cases of abuse of user data, chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said.
