That triggered Gasly, Hulkenberg and Ocon to come in next time by. Ironically, it was at this weekend's Grand Prix that the owners of Formula 1 had called for an urgent meeting of the teams to address the issue of "lack" of overtaking in the sport.

But Vettel, racing in his 200th grand prix, used every ounce of his experience to fend off the quick-finishing Finn. But of course, it would be absolutely impossible to ensure a repeat of such a Grand Prix at numerous other racing venues.

"The objectives are, can we make financial improvements, help the teams in terms of their finances, can we help the promoters have a better show and can we get some diversity into the race without making it false". Despite arriving in the pit lane successfully for a tire swap, Verstappen too retired, on lap 5.

It is against the regulations for a auto to have a mismatched set of tyres, which is why Raikkonen was instructed to stop in the pitlane.

While Vettel's win in Australia could be attributed more to luck than strategy, his win in Bahrain was thanks to his sheer talent and determination. His tyres were fresher and his vehicle was faster, yet Vettel defended his position and kept the W09 in his mirror, and crucially, just out of DRS range right until the end. The last few laps of the race were a treat to watch.

His tyres fading, the championship leader took the chequered flag only 0.6 seconds clear of Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas who piled the pressure on in the final 10 laps.

Mercedes started the Grand Prix on the back foot.

The 20-year-old Red Bull driver, who started 15th following his qualifying crash, sensed blood in his pursuit of the defending champion but his no-holds barred move cost him dearly.

"I don't actually know what to say.just unbelievable", he declared. Vettel would have none of it, saying: "Well, they had less [sic] races in 1982".

But despite having a quick auto, Ferrari had to contend with only one vehicle finishing the race. Now in the lead but yet to pit, Hamilton was similarly eyeing a one-stop strategy.

Ferrari were been fined 50,000 euros ($80,000) by race officials for an unsafe release.

Raikkonen had looked set to finish in third place before the incident happened. Two laps later, Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly gave way with good grace and yielded fourth place to Hamilton.

Kevin Magnussen was fifth in the Haas ahead of Nico Hulkenberg.

"Red Bull would have been there with us and Ferrari fighting". Daniel Ricciardo, starting from fourth and already in top form this season, retired with a mechanical fault after one lap.

"I am sorry for Kimi who could certainly have finished on the podium", he added. Both Sauber and Force India scored their first points of the season under the lights in Bahrain. "We will try to get them next time". While the three tyres were swapped, the left-rear wheel was yet to be removed.

While it was a fine case of damage limitation for Hamilton, he now trails Vettel by 17 points after two races and has not won in his past five. "I send him the best regards, and I'm sure the guys are looking after him".

Hamilton drew solace from converting a ninth-placed start - following a grid penalty - into a podium finish but could not disguise his concern at slipping further behind Vettel.

Pole-sitter Vettel was the fastest out of the blocks to retain his lead but Bottas got the jump on Raikkonen to split the Ferraris. A tally of 65 points sees Ferrari in the lead of the Constructors championship, with Mercedes second with 55 points and McLaren third with 22 points. Keep in mind to check back for more updates.
