  • Report: US Talks Secretly With North Korea Ahead Of Trump's Meeting With Kim Jong Un

American and North Korean officials have spoken several times and have met in a third country to settle on the summit's location, administration officials say - with Kim pushing for a Pyongyang meeting and the USA looking for a neutral site like Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.

The current target is late May or June, CNN quoted officials as saying.

The Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar has also been raised as a possible location, the officials told CNN. There was no immediate word on the possible venue for the talks, which would be the first ever between a sitting US president and North Korean leader.

Michael Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, and the team from the Central Intelligence Agency are dealing with the preparations to the summit.

North Korea is reportedly pushing to hold the talks in its capital, Pyongyang, but it is unclear whether Trump is willing to travel to the city.

Some analysts have said Trump's willingness to meet Kim handed North Korea a diplomatic win, as the United States had insisted for years that any such summit be preceded by North Korean steps to denuclearize.

The talks were laying the groundwork for a meeting between Pompeo and his North Korea counterpart, the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, in advance of the leaders' summit. North Korea had relayed that proposal to the USA, according Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

CNN, citing several administration officials familiar with the discussions, reported that Mr Trump agreed to the summit on the spot when visiting South Korean officials - South Korea's National Security Adviser Chung Eui Yong and intelligence chief Suh Hoon - presented him the invitation from Mr Kim early last month. Trump, who has exchanged bellicose threats with Kim in the past year, surprised the world by quickly agreeing to meet Kim to discuss the crisis over Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.
