  • Virat Kohli optimistic Royal Challengers Bangalore chances of winning Indian Premier League IPL cricket

RCB have the world-class batting talent in the form of Kohli, Quinton de Kock, Brendon McCullum and AB de Villiers.

When RCB last played against KKR at the Eden Gardens in 2017, RCB suffered an embarrassing defeat after being bowled out for a paltry 49 in 9.4 overs - the lowest team total of the tournament so far.

The second match on Sunday saw Kolkata Knight Riders take on Royal Challengers Bangalore, at Eden Gardens, and it was the hosts who triumphed as they beat Virat Kohli's side by four wickets to get their tournament off to the ideal start.

Star South Africa batsman AB de Villiers praised the new Royal Challengers Bangalore squad ahead of their first clash with Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders in the eleventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). Karthik stayed unbeaten on 35 to take KKR home with seven balls to spare, aided by a cameo from Nitish Rana (34*).

Reminding the KKR fans of an explosive knock of 154 runs against RCB in Bengaluru in 2008, Brendon McCullum started off in a similar fashion but wearing the jersey of RCB this time. Here we pick the expected playing XI for RCB. Virat Kohli's army set a target of 177 for its opponent, it is the highest target of the IPL's 11 seasons.

Kolkata's innings, in contrast, got off to a flyer as Sunil Narine, the West Indies global, smashed a 17-ball fifty. Rana's first-ball, a half-tracker, was disdainfully pulled over the midwicket boundary in what seemed a continuation of de Villiers' dominance.

At the end of the powerplay, boasting on an aggressive batting of McCullum, RCB put 52 runs on board losing just a wicket. But once de Villers returned to the pavilion, the Bangalore franchise lost their way as wickets fell in quick succession.

Kohli (31 off 33) played the second fiddle.

Part-time bowler Nitish Rana (2/11) and R Vinay Kumar (2/30) scalped two wickets each. One of the captains is also new If there is something old then the same historic Eden Gardens Stadium.

Virat Kohli too yorked himself the very next delivery to give all the advantage to the hosts as they posted 176 runs in their 20 overs courtesy Mandeep Singh who hit few sixes at the death. In the last ball of the over, Sundar nearly had his man but Mandeep Singh went across the rope at deep-wicket after latching on to another big hit from Narine.
