Arsenal 3-2 Southampton: Gunners rated and slated in Emirates thriller

Welbeck headed in an 81st-minute victor to secure Arsenal a sixth successive win in all competitions, though Wenger admitted fatigue was to blame for his side's below-par display.

Substitute Charlie Austin equalised in the second-half before Danny Welbeck grabbed his second of the match to put the Gunners ahead again.

Southampton's Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny of Arsenal both saw red in stoppage time for violent conduct, leaving their respective sides to play out the closing minutes with 10 men.

They now lead their quarter-final tie with CSKA Moscow 4-1 after the first-leg.

It was a sloppy start from Arsenal and Southampton took full advantage as some woeful defending from Shkodran Mustafi allowed Shane Long to poke home for 0-1 in the 17th minute. We create a lot of chances but we can not take them.

Their defensive problems remained, though, with Southampton's opener coming after another comical mistake.

But even a second-string side proved too strong for this Southampton team, while Arsenal will travel to Moscow with a squad both high on momentum and well rested. It was the England forward's first league goal since September.

Fellow pundit Slaven Bilic reckons Aubameyang could "do better" than Arsenal.

But Alexandre Lacazette has recently returned from a knee injury of his own and Danny Welbeck staked his claim to provide support with two goals against the Saints. His winning goal was just reward for his perseverance after a shocking open goal miss from close range minutes before. Towards the start, the Saints had the edge, and it looked like it was going to be another one of those days for Arsenal.

Mark Hughes must have smiled when he saw Arsenal's starting lineup before the game.

With the race for the top four nearly out of reach, and fifth place simply meaning automatic qualification for the continent's second tier competition the number of empty seats at the Emirates should make Josh Kroenke sit up and take notice - if not his father "Silent" Stan Kroenke.

They had a bit of bad luck as well, as Long thought he had made it 2-2 but had his effort ruled out for offside.

Defeat for Southampton leaves them in the relegation zone and three points from safety after they lost their early lead here.
