Ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont will embark on a European campaign to promote independence after being freed from jail by a German court despite an extradition request from Spain.

Puigdemont was released on bail Friday pending a decision by German judges on whether to extradite him from Spain.

Mendez de Vigo told a regular weekly news conference in Madrid on Friday that the government respects Spanish and German court decisions and doesn't interfere in their rulings.

Former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont is calling on Spanish authorities to open a dialogue with Catalan politicians.

Spain is seeking his extradition for rebellion and misuse of public funds in organizing an unauthorized referendum a year ago on Catalonia's independence from Spain.

A German court is deciding whether Puigdemont should be extradited on the lesser charge of misuse of public funds to hold a banned referendum on independence for Catalonia past year.

The court said Thursday that Puigdemont can't be extradited on the main charge Spain is leveling against him, that of rebellion, because the comparable German charge of treason specifies "violence".

A German court has ruled that former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont can be released on bail pending a decision on his possible extradition to Spain.

Ms. Barley claimed that it was now up to Spain to prove that their additional prices against Mr. Puigdemont, which she said "won't even be more easy". Puigdemont can still be extradited on the less serious charge of misuse of funds.

In his press conference, Puigdemont called for worldwide mediation and talks over the future of Catalonia, saying Spanish government should have "respect for democracy".

Puigdemont was detained in Germany on a Spanish arrest warrant as he attempted to drive on March 25 from Finland to Belgium, where he now resides.

The German court decided the charge of rebellion did not warrant extradition, because the accusation isn't punishable under German law.

Lawyers for Carles Puigdemont have arrived at the German prison where the former Catalan leader has been held for the past two weeks.

It wasn't immediately clear when Puigdemont will be released.

Puigdemont faces arrest if he returns to Spain on charges of sedition, rebellion and misuse of public funds over his role in Catalonia's separatist push.
