  • Sedins announce retirement

Daniel and Henrik announced their plans to retire at the conclusion of the season and will attempt to quietly and humbly play out their final three games for the only National Hockey League franchise they've ever known.

Quiet and humble on and off the ice, the superstar twins took the same approach with Monday's announcement that they will retire after this season. "But it became clear, after discussions with our families throughout the year, that this will be our last season", the Sedins said in a statement.

"We want to share these final three games with you", they wrote.

The 37-year-old Sedins have been with the Canucks for 18 seasons but say it's now time to turn their attention to their families and "life after hockey".

The letter summed up everything hockey fans know about the twin brothers who always stayed classy and professional beyond compare but wowed audiences with their ability and nearly sixth sense to know where the other would be at all times. "At this age, as young as the game is, they're still able to make incredible plays, go out there and make a difference for their team every night". Specifically, they state how they want to be present at all their children's hockey games, horseback riding lessons, and birthday parties. "It's time to be at home for dinner every night", the letter continues.

The announcement comes with three games remaining in the season.

"Game 7, Stanley Cup final, you want to pull that off", Henrik Sedin said.

The Swedish duo confirmed their decision in an open letter published on the Canucks website, saying they planned to spend more time with their families.

Both have put amassed outstanding NHL careers and they could both wind up enshrined alongside one another in the Hockey Hall of Fame in the future.

Both Sedins were top prospects in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and had made it known they wanted to play together though the draft process posed a possible challenge to the pair signing with the same team.

Henrik won the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP, while Daniel won the Ted Lindsay Award, as the most outstanding player as voted on by his peers.

The game will miss their skill, their shared brain, their short passes, their deflections from the high slot, their dignity and class on-and-off the ice. What struck me in the article entitled "Mirror, Mirror" was a quote from Gradin, the thoughtful Canucks player-turned-scout. [Canucks head coach Travis Green] is building a strong culture and emphasizes a style of play we know will be successful.

"Danny got a cut on his face the first year and got stitches and we were all excited", chuckled Burke of the identifier everyone in the Canucks organization used to differentiate the lads from Ornskoldsvik.

As tough as it will be for the Sedins to say goodbye to the game and to fans, it will likely be just as hard for the fans to say goodbye to the Sedins. It was a historical moment seeing both twins being picked back-to-back by the same team - two guys with incredible talent that would be the cornerstones of the Canucks' franchise for almost two decades.
