  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the annual health conference in Tel Aviv

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was "a terrorist", whereas Israel was a "state of terror", the goal of which is to target innocent civilians.

The Prime Minister defends the action of the IDF in Gaza on Friday, and rejects criticism from Turkey's Erdogan, "who for years has bombed civilian populations indiscriminately".

"Apparently this is how Ankara marks April 1", he said, a reference to pranksters' observance of the date as "April Fool's".

Speaking during a press conference in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Netanyahu said, "I am not used to receiving lectures about morality from a leader who bombs Kurdish villages in his native Turkey, who jails journalists, who helps Iran go around worldwide sanctions, and who helps terrorists, including in Gaza, who kill innocent people".

"Hey Netanyahu! You are an occupier".

In another speech he said: "You are a terrorist state". And it is as an occupier that you are on those lands.

Palestinian health officials said Israeli forces used mostly gunfire against the protesters, in addition to tear gas and rubber bullets.

The demonstration comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel and the exodus of many Arabs - which Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" (Catastrophe).

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said troops fired "towards the main instigators" during rioting in which petrol bombs and stones were thrown. "While Israel has the right to protect its borders, the use of force must be proportionate at all times", she said.

In a message on his official twitter account late on Saturday, Netanyahu praised the Israeli troops for killing the Palestinians which he claimed were aimed at guarding Israel. At least 16 were killed by Israeli fire, with hundreds being injured.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, also blamed the bloodshed on the militant group.

Both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini have called for an independent investigation.
