Summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump are being planned for April and May, respectively.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono left open the possibility that Abe might meet Kim at some point. "The Japan-North Korea summit will be held in Pyongyang in early June following the U.S".

At a subsequent working dinner, the ministers affirmed the importance of maintaining maximum pressure on North Korea to compel it to completely, verifiably and irreversibly abandon its nuclear weapons and missile programs, according to Japanese government officials.

Kono, who recently met United States officials in Washington, also said Washington agreed with Tokyo that North Korea must abandon its medium- and short-range missiles as well as ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) capable of hitting the U.S. mainland.

Abe met the relatives of the abductees in Tokyo on Friday.

Naoyuki Shinohara, who was also deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund, said Washington will keep pushing for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with Japan given Trump's "America First" agenda - and Tokyo's calls to use a multilateral framework will only buy it some time.

A Chongryon spokesman in Tokyo declined to comment on the Asahi report.

He urged Washington not to violate World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules and expressed hope the United States would return to a multi-nation Asia-Pacific trade pact negotiated by Trump's predecessor but shunned by Trump.

"I'll talk to Prime Minister Abe of Japan and others - great guy, friend of mine - and there will be a little smile on their face", Trump said last Thursday at the White House while talking about trade.

The Asahi said in an article from Seoul Kim's government had explained its bilateral diplomatic plans for South Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russian Federation, in that order.

This diplomatic outreach "fits within Kim's broader strategy", said Nagy, who explained that the dictator is looking to disrupt American efforts to maximize pressure on his administration. Abe has denied any wrongdoing by himself or his wife.
