In 1886, at the age of 21, she graduated from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) with Kei Okami of Japan and Tabat Islambooly of Syria, who became the first woman to obtain a degree in Western medicine.
Born in 1865 to an extremely orthodox Brahmin family in Kalyan, Maharashtra, a 9-year-old girl got married to a widower who was nearly twenty years her senior.
Anandi Gopal Joshi's family had been landlords for many years during the British Raj, but due to excessive taxes by the British, as well as losses that had accumulated over the years, her family underwent a troublesome financial period when Yanuma (Anandi Gopal Joshi) was still very young.
It was her husband, who wrote to the Royal Wilder, a well-known American missionary, speaking of Joshi's interest in medicine. She received a grand welcome and was appointed as physician-in-charge of the female ward of the Albert Edward Hospital, Kolhapur. Gopalrao couldn't go but sent Anandi despite her poor health.
She was then enrolled at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, from where she attained a medical degree. He inspired her to proceed in medicine. Anandi Gopal Joshi is that woman. Anandi Joshi was originally named "Yamuna", and kept that name till her marriage, after which, her husband - Gopalrao Joshi - gave her the name "Anandi". Joshi's achievements, however short-lived, were significant at a time when girl education had no prominence in India. She is also the first woman to step in the US, opening gates to many young women who wanted to do much more than limiting her life to household chores only.
For the era, she lived in - and today even - that forms a rather revolutionary image, and the combination is nothing short of laudable and exemplary. Unfortunately, the medicines failed to heal her completely. Her death was mourned throughout India. But, on February 26, 1887, she passed away due to tuberculosis at the age of 22. Her ashes were sent to her hostess Carpenter to be kept in her family cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York. And, a Lucknow institute has named an honorary award after her.
