  • Koreas fix date and place for historic summit

Take a listen. 16 "South and North Korea agreed to work together to successfully hold an inter-Korean summit, in view of the historic significance it would have in terms of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, building peace, and improving inter-Korean relations".

In a joint statement, the delegations announced that South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will meet at the Peace House, situated on the southern side of Panmunjom.

The venue will make Kim the first North Korean leader to set foot in the South since the end of the Korean War - although according to Pyongyang's official accounts, during the conflict, his grandfather and predecessor Kim Il Sung went several times to Seoul, which twice fell to his forces.

Both sides agreed to hold working-level talks next Wednesday to discuss protocol and security related to the summit.

"The issue of [North Korea's] denuclearisation [is] the issue that we will focus on for discussion", Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, the South's chief delegate, told reporters before leaving for the talks. South Korean envoys are to visit North Korea for two days to discuss issues.

After months of saber-rattling with Kim and his infamous 'fire and fury' threats, Trump surprisingly agreed to meet the North Korean leader "sometime" in May.

This comes after the delegations from two Koreas met at the Panmunjom, the border village located along the heavily guarded Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which acts as the de facto border between the two countries.

Trump welcomed the meeting between Kim and Xi, while calling for continued pressure against the isolated regime.

North and South Korea will hold their first summit in more than a decade on April 27, South Korean officials said on Thursday, after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged his commitment to denuclearization as tensions ease between the old foes.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promised Beijing would uphold its friendship with North Korea after his meeting with Mr Kim.

The United States and South Korea agreed to revise their six-year-old trade pact with a side deal to deter competitive currency devaluation by Seoul and with concessions for US autos and pharmaceutical companies, Trump administration officials said on Tuesday.

Since late a year ago, China, one of the five permanent U.N. Security Council members, has bolstered economic sanctions against Pyongyang, dealing a severe blow to North Korea's economy, foreign affairs experts said.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he may hold up a trade agreement reached this week with South Korea until after a deal is reached with North Korea on denuclearisation.

North Korea reportedly expects between $20 billion and $50 billion in aid from Japan if they normalize their relations, internal party papers reportedly revealed.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula had been high throughout much of 2017, fueled by North Korea's frequent missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as USA military exercises and threatening statements by President Donald Trump.

"The South and the North will continue to discuss other practical issues which can be raised by means of exchanging documents", the statement added.

The Asahi newspaper reported Thursday that Kim's administration has mentioned a possible summit with Abe in June following one with U.S. President Donald Trump.
