  • Trump mulls having Pentagon fund border wall Reports

Stymied by the lack of funding for his promised US-Mexico border wall in the latest spending bill, President Donald Trump now wants the military to pay for the barrier, according to The Washington Post.

Trump tweeted, March 5 that "Because of the $700 and $716 Billion Dollars gotten to rebuild our Military, many jobs are created and our Military is again rich. Building a great Border Wall, with drugs (poison) and enemy combatants pouring into our Country, is all about National Defense".

The $1.3 trillion spending bill, which Trump ruefully signed last week, only included $1.6 billion for fencing and levees on the border and just $641 million for new primary fencing in areas that do not now have barriers.

CBS's Paula Reid says the President's signature campaign promise could be being paid by Americans.

As the Washington Post reported, Trump has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and leaders in Congress that the construction of the border wall would address a "national security" risk and that the Pentagon should pay for it.

In last week's budget, US$1.6 billion (NZ$2.2 billion) of USA taxpayer money was included, which Trump said was a down payment on the wall.

"We can't allow Donald Trump to steal already-limited resources from our troops to fund a pointless border wall that will serve little other goal than to satisfy his own fragile ego", Rep. "Certainly that's one", the official said.

Reached for comment, a Pentagon spokesman referred Fox News to the White House. Trump wanted as much as $25 billion for his wall project, but the legislation authorized only $1.6 billion for fencing, surveillance technology and other measures.

Democrats in Congress would likely chafe at military spending going to the construction of a border wall, and military officials may also blanch at the possibility, White House advisers said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said to the newspaper: "First Mexico was supposed to pay for it, then United States taxpayers, and now our men and women in uniform? This would be a blatant misuse of military funds and tied up in court for years", Schumer said. (Those experts also say that the The Wall will largely useless "unless it's 35,000 feet high.") Meanwhile, at the White House, good soldier Sarah Sanders on Tuesday told reporters that the administration "still has plans to look for potential ways" for Mexico to pay for the wall.

Trump allegedly proposed the idea in a private meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan while reviewing the omnibus spending bill.
