John Bolton, famously abrasive, is an experienced operator in the 'swamp'

Trump's announcement that he will replace Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster as national-security adviser, effective April 9, while disquieting, can not come as a much of a surprise.

Bolton, who was born in Baltimore and graduated summa cum laude from Yale, briefly flirted with running for president in 2015, making campaign trips to early states and candidate cattle-calls.

One of the cold comforts of Donald Trump's presidency is the embarrassing and insanely high churn in his administration.

NBC News White House correspondent Geoff Bennett says John Bolton is "controversial even in Republican circles".

A super PAC led by former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton paid Cambridge Analytica more than $1 million. He brought in McMaster to replace Michael Flynn, who, along with Trump's deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and campaign aide George Papadopoulos, has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The semi-official Fars news agency quoted Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council, as saying that for an "apparent superpower it is a matter of shame that its national security adviser receives wages from a terrorist group". Walking in to the White House? He is a familiar figure in Washington, with a walrus-like moustache and hard-charging views on many global challenges. McMaster is a thoughtful, deliberative scholar, who often counseled caution and restraint in the face of crises.

Speaking in an interview on the "Cats Roundtable" radio show, Bolton said Pyongyang is seeking to "buy more time" through talks with the USA and will attempt to prolong negotiations while it continues developing its nuclear weapons. (President George W. Bush gave him a recess appointment.) When he held a senior post at the State Department, Bolton clashed repeatedly with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and ultimately broke with Bush, whom he considered insufficiently hawkish.

China's coming propaganda offensiveChina is overhauling its state media to better control domestic content and to create a propaganda behemoth that will spread Beijing's message around the world.

Bolton was also accused of threatening to fire analysts who disagreed with his conclusions, as well as insubordination, spying on his superiors and leaking documents. He is being replaced by former UN Ambassador and Fox News contributor, #John Bolton.

A White House official said Trump was ultimately drawn to Bolton, in part because he was impressed by his many appearances on Fox News. Yet, if Bolton's views on many issues align with those of the president, they are not in flawless sync.

"Freedman is a very political guy that Bolton likes", one Republican source said.

Ordinary Americans too have derided President Trump's announcement. He (or she) should run the interagency process without putting a thumb on the scale.

Bolton, 69, has been an especially outspoken critic of the Iran nuclear agreement. His style is likely to discourage dissenting views and restrict not just options but analysis as well. The message is that aggressors must take into consideration that the U.S. reserves the right of unilateral military action rather than waiting for multi-lateral military actions. And like Trump, he has little respect for worldwide law either. "That would risk striking after the North has deliverable nuclear weapons, a much more unsafe situation", he wrote in a February op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.

Carter added that he "hope [s] and pray [s]" that a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place. And, as his ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley pushes ahead with efforts to cut US funding for the world body, he will have a die-hard unilateralist by his side, cheering him on.
