Grab to offer Uber services from April 9 in Southeast Asia

  • Grab will purchase Uber's ride-hailing and food delivery operations in Southeast Asia in a deal valued at several

The services throughout Asia have long relied on discounts and promotions for consumers and incentives for drivers, which made for tough competition, pushing down profit margins.

For those on employment permits, Grab said it is prepared to help with their applications to the relevant authorities for their permits to be transferred to the company.

"But I am personally not anxious".

The deal was dismaying to many in Asia who have often compared the rival apps in search of the best deal. And in 2016, Uber sold off its local operations to the dominant Chinese ride sharing service, Didi Chuxing.

This is to give time for Grab to find new roles for them.

"With the merger, there is no real competition anymore".

House Committee on Appropriations Vice Chairman Luis Raymund F. Villafuerte Jr. of the Second District of Camarines Sur and House Committee on Transportation member Party-list Rep. Ciriaco Calalang of Kabayan issued separate statements in the wake of the recent acquisition by Grab Philippines of the Southeast Asian operations of its main rival, Uber.

"As the only app left, Grab can easily increase prices", Pereira, 24, said.

In August past year, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Philippine agency in charge of regulating public transportation, suspended Uber's operations because it continued to accept new applications for drivers even after the LTFRB ordered it and Grab to stop accepting new drivers. It means reduced competition for Grab in a market with 620 million people.

"We fully understand the uncertainty and anxiety Uber employees feel during this initial transition phase", said Ms Ong.

Other modes of transportation like jeepneys are also undergoing changes. Like the prior transactions, the deals free Uber to invest in other, more lucrative markets, while granting the company a stake in their competitors' expanding businesses, experts say.

"We believe that this buyout is not favorable to the Filipino commuters as it would lessen choices for all of us".

Davis Polk also declined to comment on the Grab deal.

"So can we use JustGrab now?" one asked, referring to the rival app which ComfortDelGro objected to just a week earlier.

Regulatory obstacles and fierce protests by licensed taxi operators have hampered Uber Hong Kong, with some drivers even being arrested on charges of running an illegal service.

Additionally, Grab's decisions to install in-cab CCTV and feature live journey-tracking have allayed many concerns of lone female passengers - especially those riding while browsing the news on-the-go about Uber's apparent culture of sexism and harassment.
