Holocaust survivor killed in Paris during anti-Semitic attack

  • Jewish Holocaust survivor (85) found stabbed to death in Paris flat

Speaking during a visit to Jerusalem on Monday, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said it was "plausible" that Knoll was killed because of her religion and her death showed the need for a "fundamental and permanent" fight against anti-Semitism.

She had been stabbed repeatedly before the apartment was set on fire, the autopsy revealed.

Kalifat, the head of the Jewish council went on to say that the two suspects are both of North African origin and claimed one of them had said Mrs. Knoll was targeted because the attackers believed Jews have money.

Knoll lived alone in Paris' 11 arrondissement after her husband, also a holocaust survivor, died in the early 2000's.

The killing of Knoll came a month after a judge made a decision to treat the murder of a retired Jewish schoolteacher in Paris last April as anti-Semitic, after a long campaign by community groups.

Ms. Knoll was a child in Paris when, in the summer of 1942, the French police, cooperating with the Germans, rounded up thousands of the city's Jews, stuffing them into a cycling stadium, the VĂ©lodrome d'Hiver.

French politician Meyer Habib has claimed that one of the suspects arrested was the neighbour of the victim, a 35-year-old Muslim man who was already well-known to police. They were handed preliminary charges of robbery, damaging property, and murder with anti-Semitic motives, he said.

Leading Jewish group CRIF said 85-year-old Mireille Knoll was slain last week in Paris' eastern 11th district.

President Emmanuel Macron responded to her death by saying that he was determined to stamp out anti-Semitism in France, home to western Europe's largest Jewish community. That murder was reclassified as anti-Semitic last month. However, anti-Semitic violence rose.

Traore, who is of Malian descent, allegedly recited verses from the Koran while beating Ms Halimi before throwing her out of a third-floor window and shouting: "I've killed the Shaitan [devil in Arabic]".

A police source told AFP that the suspect had convictions for rape and sexual assault. "We offer our profound condolences to the family of Mireille Knoll".

"To survive the Holocaust, only to be brutally attacked and murdered at age 85 for being Jewish is beyond cruel". "I reaffirm my total determination in fighting anti-Semitism".

"While President Macron and other French leaders have forcefully condemned anti-Semitism, the response of law enforcement and other authorities to expressions and acts of anti-Semitic hatred is particularly important to reinforce a sense of security for Jewish communities", they continued.

Some are comparing the murder of Mireille Knoll to that of Sarah Halimi, another elderly Jewish woman who was murdered in France in what a judge labeled an anti-Semitic hate crime.
