Five forces' personnel, five militants killed in ongoing Kupwara gunfight

Four militants were killed on Tuesday in the exchange of fire.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 20 (Xinhua) - Four militants were killed Tuesday in a fierce gunfight with troops in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, army said.

The slain policemen were identified as Deepak Pandit and Mohd Yusuf while one among the two slain Army troopers was identified as Mohammad Ashraf.

One more militant was killed taking the death toll of militants to five in the ongoing operation while one soldier is also missing, official sources told news agency GNS.

An army official said a search operation was going on in the forest area.

However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the forest, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. However, Senior Superintendent of Kupwara Police Shamsher Hussian had said that no bodies had been found yet.

Apart from the five militants, the fierce gun-battle which ended also claimed the lives of three Army men and two policemen. His condition is stable, police said.


Sources said that two more SOG men including Sub Inspector Harvinder Singh, an army soldier, and CRPF personnel were injured.

"So far, five militants have been killed".

Authorities have rushed additional reinforcements to the forest area to take on militants.

Meanwhile, a wreath-laying ceremony was held for Thusoo at the District Police lines where Pani led the security forces in paying tributes to their slain colleague.

Pertinently, the encounter raged between the forces and militants in Halmatpora village in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Tuesday.

"The fire was retaliated by the security forces ensuing an encounter".
